Treatment courses, cosmetic services and procedures offered

Wrinkles (Rhytides)

A UF Health cosmetic dermatologist can help patients treat wrinkles in a number of ways, including through neuromodulating agents (such as Botox and Dysport), hyaluronic acid filler treatment (for example, with Juvederm, Restalyne or Belotero), microneedling, chemical peel procedures and CO2 laser resurfacing.

Neuromodulating agents, like Botox, are the most widely recognized treatment modalities for wrinkles by the public. These agents function by paralyzing muscles in the focus area with the desired result of smoothing wrinkles. This procedure is normally fast acting and full effects are realized within 10 to 14 days. The results from Botox and Dysport treatment normally last around three months.

Volume loss & facial rejuvenation

Volume loss can be treated effectively with hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm, Restalyne and Belotero. These replace the natural hyaluronic acid and provide skin volume and support. Ultimately, this also results in reducing wrinkles.

Results from hyaluronic acid fillers are yielded immediately in most cases. There are not any serious side effects with the use of hyaluronic acid fillers. Some slight swelling or bruising may occur after the procedure, but patients should not experience any downtime.

Unwanted hair loss

Hair loss is routinely treated with platelet rich plasma, or PRP. With PRP treatment, blood is taken from the patient and spun until growth factors are isolated. The resulting platelet rich plasma is then injected at the hair loss site. It normally takes multiple treatments over the course of several months for PRP to show results. However, these results can last for months to years.

Varicose veins

There are a variety of ways to treat varicose veins, also known as spider veins. One treatment modality is sclerotherapy. In sclerotherapy, a medication is injected into dilated veins. This results in the veins closing, which reduces their appearance on the skin. Normally, sclerotherapy takes months to see results, and several sessions are recommended. Positive results can last for years.

Laser treatment is another option to solve varicose veins. Nd: YAG laser therapy works by focusing light to target red blood cells. The cells then absorb the light, which results in diminishing the appearance of the veins. Multiple sessions are usually needed to show results, which can take up to six weeks to fully appear. Results normally last for many years.

Submental fullness

Submental fullness, or fullness of the chin, is frequently treated with the injectible Kybella. Kybella targets the fat cells in the target area and destroys them. The result is an enhanced profile and an appearance of reduced fat below the chin.

A minimum of three treatments are normally needed to achieve maximum efficacy, and results can take several months to appear. The procedure's outcomes are normally long lasting.

Cosmetic lesions and unwanted birthmarks and moles

Benign lesions, such as birthmarks or moles, can be removed via an array of techniques, including by electrocautery, excision or shave removal. The method used largely depends on the type of legion. The results of a lesion removal procedure are usually permanent. Recovery from lesion removal normally takes about 14 days, depending on the removal site and status of the wound or stitches.

Skin tags

Skin tags can be removed by cryotherapy, electrosurgery and by manual removal. In cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the skin tag. As the name implies, electrosurgery employs an electric current for skin tag removal. Results from both cryotherapy and electrosurgery can take up to two weeks before resolution. Manual removal is immediate.

UF Health offers a number of treatment options for scars and acne, including 1540 nm laser treatment, chemical peels, CO2 laser resurfacing, excision, hyaluronic acid fillers (for depressed scars), intralesional steroids (for raised scars) and microneedling.
