Neurodiagnostics are essential to effectively treat any disorder of the nervous system and provide quality health care. These tests may be ordered as part of a complete neurological assessment and consultation, and they must be interpreted by a neurologist. The UF Health Neurodiagnostic Center provides comprehensive tests including:

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a test used to measure the electrical activity of the brain. A brief (less than one hour) study is typically performed to evaluate seizures and syncope (passing out), along with other changes in awareness that may be related to another neurological condition such as dementia. Longer studies can be done as an outpatient or inpatient, depending on the circumstances. A patient may also be admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at UF Health Shands Hospital to localize and classify seizures. The UF Health Comprehensive Epilepsy Program has the oldest epilepsy surgery program in Florida and is a Level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Program as classified by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.

The EEG lab is accredited by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists.

Evoked potential testing is a special subset of EEG, evaluating brain waves provoked by a specific stimulus. Our neurodiagnostic center performs visual (VEP), brainstem auditory (BAEP), upper somatosensory (USSEP) and lower somatosensory (LSSEP) evoked potential testing. These modalities are commonly used in the diagnosis of conditions such as multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis and diseases of the spinal cord.

Electromyography and nerve conduction velocity tests (EMG/ NCV) are performed to evaluate a patient’s nerves, muscles and neuromuscular junction (the peripheral nervous system) for a condition such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, muscular dystrophy, myopathy, myasthenia gravis or neuropathy.

Transcranial Doppler (TCD) studies use noninvasive Doppler ultrasound to evaluate blockages and spasm of the blood supply to the brain. This is helpful in the evaluation and treatment of stroke and aneurysm, and this technique is performed on both inpatients and outpatients.

All TCD and inpatient tests are done here in the UF Health Neurodiagnostic Center. Outpatient EMG testing is conducted at UF Health Neurology – Neuromedicine Hospital. Ambulatory, daytime and sleep tests are conducted at the UF Health Sleep Center in Magnolia Parke.
