
UF Health Shands Children's Hospital: Expansions
UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital is always looking for ways to expand and improve our facilities in order to exceed of the needs of our pediatric patient population. Our latest expansion focused on our Neonatal ICU, and with the additional beds added with that project, we now have 208 licensed beds in the children’s hospital.

UF Health Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit/Congenital Heart Center
- 23 beds
- Large, private patient rooms with bathrooms/showers
- Ceiling-mounted exam lights; ceiling-mounted patient-lifting systems; gaming station and elevision in each room; nurses’ alcoves in corridors with state-of-the-art monitoring systems for patient observation
- Care for cardiac patients from birth to adults with congenital and acquired heart disease
- Nutrition room for patients and their families
- Family waiting area
- Skylights and child-friendly atmosphere
UF Health Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
- 24-bed medical/surgical unit
- Shared family waiting area (with the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit)
- Cares for patients from birth to 21 years old
- Treats an average of 1,300 patients a year
- Largest of its kind in Florida
- Primary coverage area includes entire north Florida and south Georgia regions
- Strong collaboration with the UF Health Congenital Heart Center and pediatric surgery
- Supports pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties

2017
UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: opened February 2017
- 16 new care pods — adding eight Level 3 beds (increasing from 22 to 30) and eight Level 2 beds (increasing from 30 to 38)
- Four private rooms that accommodate family members
- Dedicated Neonatal Neuro ICU section to monitor and care for infants with brain injuries
- Waiting area with a sibling play area
- Dedicated breastfeeding areas
- Warm and comforting design with a nature theme in harmony with the rest of the children’s hospital
