Prostate cancer tends to occur most commonly in men over the age of 50, and greater than 65% of all cases are diagnosed in men 65 years and older. The incidence of prostate cancer increases with age; the lifetime risk for the average American man is about one-in-nine. Well-established risk factors include older age, family history, and possibly race (African Americans are at greater risk). Other potential risk factors thought to be associated prostate cancer include a diet high in saturated fat and obesity.
At UF Health, our urologic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists work together to develop individualized, multidisciplinary treatment plans for each patient’s unique circumstances based on age, general health, life expectancy and tumor characteristics. Your prostate cancer team works with you to develop the best course of action. This might include surgery, focal therapy, radiation therapies, immunotherapy or a combination of multiple treatment types. Additionally, our prostate cancer team at the UF Health actively participate in clinical trials to advance the field of prostate cancer care.

Tony Braun was at his urologist’s office one day in 2010 because of a kidney stone when the physician became alarmed. Bloodwork showed Tony’s prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, a blood test that screens for prostate abnormalities, had elevated from 1.9 to 2.7 over the course of nine years.
