About me

William “Troy” Donahoo, MD, FTOS, is a Clinical Professor and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of Florida. He received his medical degree from the University of Colorado, where he also continued his training through an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes. He is a practicing Endocrinologist and diabetes and obesity medicine researcher with research experience in lifestyle interventions, physiological studies and real-world data epidemiology/comparative effectiveness research. Since 2010, his major research focus has been leveraging data from the electronic medical record to answer epidemiological and pragmatic outcomes questions. In high impact work, he showed a substantial risk of increased opioid use following bariatric surgery. He has also been able to develop and validate algorithms for type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as NASH and advanced fibrosis using a variety of databases including PCORNet. His current and recent work has been in collaboration with investigators from Health Outcomes and Bioinformatics, the College of Nursing, and the College of Pharmacy and has involved using real-world data to evaluate the safety of older anti-obesity medications, evaluation of medication adherence in American Indians with type 2 diabetes and evaluating disparities in telehealth use following the sudden initiation with COVID in addition to disparities in diabetes diagnosis following COVID.
