UF physician named to national grant review panel

Sankar Swaminathan, M.D., has been appointed to a National Institutes of Health study section by the Center for Scientific Review, which formulates grant application review policies and procedures for the NIH. He will review and rate applications for research grants in areas related to AIDS, including studies of how herpesvirus infections affect AIDS patients.

Swaminathan, an associate professor in the department of internal medicine at UF’s College of Medicine and senior member of the University of Florida Shands Cancer Center, studies how the Epstein-Barr virus, a form of herpesvirus, sometimes causes cancer in transplant patients. He will serve on the study section through 2004.
