Joyce Stechmiller named fellow of American Academy of Nursing

Joyce Stechmiller, Ph.D., A.R.N.P.

University of Florida College of Nursing associate professor Joyce Stechmiller, Ph.D., A.R.N.P., has been named a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

The academy awards fellowships to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to effective nursing through practice, research, creative development, scholarly work, the influence of public policy or a combination of these. Fellows also must show the potential to continue making significant contributions to the field of nursing.

Stechmiller, a national expert in wound care, teaches didactic and clinical courses to master's degree students and mentors doctoral students. She also holds secondary appointments at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System as director of skin and wound education and research and as a member of the Rehabilitation Outcomes Research Center.

Stechmiller conducts translational research focused on chronic wound healing, nutrition, immune function and health outcomes of older adults. She has worked with national organizations to develop evidence-based guidelines — for example, she chaired a task force of the international Wound Healing Society to develop prevention guidelines for pressure ulcers, which were published in Wound Repair and Regeneration — and she consults with industry in the development of wound care therapies. Her work has been funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and industry.

She also serves as an editorial consultant and peer reviewer for the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the International Journal of Quality Health Care, Biological Research in Nursing, Clinical Nutrition and the American Journal of Critical Care.
