Acute care surgeon Martin Rosenthal, M.D., named surgical director of UF Health Shands ORs

Martin Rosenthal, M.D., an associate professor in the department of surgery at the University of Florida, has been named surgical director of the UF Health Shands ORs.

In this role, Rosenthal will serve as a liaison between hospital administration and medical staff, developing and maintaining knowledge of relevant safety policies and standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies like The Joint Commission and the Agency for Health Care Administration, and participating in regulatory visits and subsequent follow-ups. Additionally, he will assist in the education and development of personnel, implementing policies, procedures and clinical pathways to promote efficient, cost-effective practices to ensure medical care of the highest standard.

Further responsibilities will include serving on hospital committees as assigned, including Infection Control, Quality Assurance and hospital ad-hoc committees. Other duties will include assessment of patient surveys and satisfaction, as well as consulting with hospital administrators on the equipment and resources needed to continue providing cost-effective, quality patient care.

Rosenthal, an acute care surgeon, is chair of the UF Nutrition Committee, director of the UF Abdominal Wall Reconstruction and Intestinal Rehab, and former president of the UF College of Medicine Faculty Council. His clinical expertise centers on providing innovative care for patients with large abdominal wall hernias, enterocutaneous fistulas and hernias, trauma patients, and those who are critically ill in the ICU. He has built several clinical protocols for improving the outcomes of patients with enterocutaneous fistulas and hernias, and is widely regarded as an expert in nutritional therapies aimed at decreasing inflammation and catabolism.
