At UF Health, our pediatric surgeons are highly trained to treat diseases and conditions of all types. The conditions and treatments listed below are those in which we lead the state or country with highly successful outcomes and unique treatment options.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) Program

UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital is one of the few children’s hospitals in the country that has a whole program based on caring for patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. From prenatal diagnosis, evaluation and counseling, through exacting and consistent care of CDH newborns from birth to discharge, to a CDH follow-up clinic, our program has a structure dedicated to providing CDH children the highest levels of outcome and follow-up available anywhere. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program

Our ECMO program began in 1989 and has been repeatedly designated a Center of Excellence by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. Neonatal and pediatric patients are considered for this life-saving intervention, with diagnoses that include, but are not limited to, congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), meconium ileus, and sepsis.  Learn more about the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program.

Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders

Our program specializes in treating all forms of gastrointestinal motility disorders, including benign conditions such as constipation to more serious conditions such as achalasiaHirschsprung’s disease, chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction and gastroparesis. Learn more about the Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders clinic.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

At UF Health’s Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinic, pediatric surgeons, gastroenterologists, psychologists, radiologists, nutritionists, social workers, child life specialists, nurses and clinical pharmacists all work together to fully evaluate and treat each child or adolescent who comes through the doors. This team collaborates to help patients be as healthy as possible, while striving to minimize procedures that will further interrupt childhood or adolescence. Pediatric Bowel Management Program

The UF Health Pediatric Bowel Management Program is the only program in north central Florida to provide care and treatment options for children born with congenital anomalies that make it difficult to anticipate or control their bowel activity. While treatment options vary, our UF Health board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric surgeons and specialized nurse practitioners are proud to offer therapies that are individualized for patients based on their unique needs. Pediatric Burn Program

The Pediatric Burn Program at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital is the only multidisciplinary, comprehensive burn team in north central Florida. Our unique expertise is immediately available to treat children from birth to 18 years of age with all types of burn wounds. Our pediatric surgeons are experienced in caring for burn wounds in children, and they work with specialized nurses, critical care physicians, therapists and many other dedicated team members to deliver outstanding care to our patients.
