MRI Fusion Prostate Biopsy Program

Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in men with an estimated 268,490 new cases in 2021. Despite how common prostate cancer is, there are limitations in our ability to detect it based on traditional screening and biopsy methods.

Multiparametric MRI of the prostate has emerged as a new tool to help urologists detect prostate cancer. Since 2016, at UF Health, we have been using the UroNav Fusion Biopsy System® to merge a patient's pre-biopsy MRI images of the prostate with the ultrasound-guided biopsy images in real-time to allow for a targeted and more precise prostate biopsy. This system, known as a MRI fusion prostate biopsy has improved our prostate cancer detection rates in men with a prior negative biopsy and persistently suspicious PSA test as well as helped us better select patients for active surveillance of their prostate cancer.

All patients who undergo a UroNav® fusion prostate biopsy at UF Health have their history and MRI reviewed by our dedicated multidisciplinary team of radiologists, urologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists both before and after the fusion biopsy. This allows us to both optimally plan our MRI fusion biopsies and formulate treatment recommendations if prostate cancer is detected.
