Alex J Delgado, DDS, MS

Dr. Alex J. Delgado is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Restorative Dental Sciences at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. He serves as Director of Continuing Dental Education and he is also Director of the Comprehensive Dental Program, the University of Florida. Dr. Delgado previously served as Division Director of Operative Dentistry and has held several leadership and service roles within the College of Dentistry.

Dr. Delgado received his DDS degree from Universidad Santa María in Caracas, Venezuela, in 2001. From 2001 to 2010, he practiced dentistry in private practice and clinical settings in Venezuela and North Carolina. In 2011, he joined the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, where he completed a Master’s degree and a Clinical Certificate in Advanced Operative Dentistry. He joined the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 2014.

Dr. Delgado maintains an active faculty practice one day per week, with a clinical focus on preventive, restorative, TMJ/TMD and esthetic dentistry. His more than 25 years of clinical experience complement his academic responsibilities and contribute to his approach to teaching restorative and comprehensive patient care.

Dr. Delgado has a broad research portfolio in restorative dentistry and dental materials, including dental ceramics, dental cements, impression materials, light-curing technologies, and the finishing and polishing of restorative materials. A significant component of his scholarly work has focused on dental erosion and its clinical implications. He also has a strong interest in educational research and the advancement of teaching and learning in dental education. Dr. Delgado has published more than 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts and four book chapters and has presented his research at national and international scientific meetings.

Mentorship is an important component of Dr. Delgado’s academic career. He has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students through research projects and scholarly activities, supporting their development in research methodology, scientific writing, critical evaluation of the literature, and scientific presentation. He has also served as an ad hoc reviewer for several peer-reviewed scientific journals and has held editorial responsibilities for dental publications.

As Director of Continuing Dental Education, he oversees educational programming designed to support the professional development and lifelong learning of dentists and dental team members. His educational interests emphasize evidence-based dentistry, critical thinking, clinical excellence, and the integration of emerging technologies into contemporary dental practice.

Dr. Delgado is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, Academy of Operative Dentistry, Florida Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research. He has also participated in practice-based research and professional committees focused on dental materials, research communication, and dissemination.

His academic contributions have been recognized through several honors, including the Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Award from the American Prosthodontic Society in 2016, the University of Florida College of Dentistry Teacher of the Year Award in 2015–2016 and 2018–2019, the Sustained Exemplary Teaching Award in 2016–2017, and the Rising Star Faculty Award from the Academy of Operative Dentistry in 2019 and recently, he was awarded the 2025 National Advocate Award from ASDA.
