My bio
Hello, my name is Dr. Ashraf Muzwagi, and I am an assistant professor in the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Florida Department of Psychiatry. I received my medical degree from the University of Tripoli in Libya followed by an internship in neurology from Tripoli Medical Center. I went on to complete a general psychiatry residency at Texas Tech University and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the University of Florida. I am board certified in psychiatry and neurology.
I specialize in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry, drawn to this by an interest and intrigue in human biology since early childhood. Expanding my understanding of child development and behavior will give me more insight into both adolescent and adult patients with relevant trauma or experiences from their early life. Even more fascinating to me is that youth psyches are somewhat flexible and it is satisfying to be able to provide early prevention and see their quick response to intervention. I have found that using the knowledge of medical, neurological, biological, psychological, social and developmental factors are challenging, fascinating and intellectually stimulating.
My specific interests are neurodevelopmental and related disorders, psychosis, mood disorder and neuropsychiatric disorder. I am currently working on projects including “Efficacy of anticonvulsant for agitation in dementia patients; a systematic review of clinical trials,” “First generalized seizure in adolescent during psychiatric hospitalization” and “Fatal child neglect or neonaticide?”
I have special expertise in treating patients with trauma and stress related disorders, neurodevelopmental and related disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, psychosis, mood disorder, OCD, Tourette’s and excoriation skin disorders.
I would like my patients to know that I strive to be humble, respectful and a great listener. Outside of work, I enjoy camping, hiking, running and swimming. In addition to English, I am fluent in Arabic.
