Azra Bihorac, MD, MS, FCCM, FASN, is the Senior Associate Dean for Research at the University of Florida College of Medicine; the R. Glenn Davis Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Biomedical Engineering; the Director of the AI for Health Institute at the University of Florida; the Director of the Precision and Intelligent Systems in Medicine Research Partnership (PRISMAp); and Director of the Intelligent Clinical Care Center (IC3), a multi-disciplinary center transforming medical AI research, education, and clinical applications to advance patients’ health. Her research focuses on a trustworthy, reproducible, and ethical computing framework for artificial intelligence in medicine, particularly in nephrology and acute and critical care.
Dr. Bihorac's 27-year career in public medicine spans three countries. She earned her medical degree at the University of Sarajevo School of Medicine and completed nephrology training at Marmara University in Istanbul before joining the University of Florida, where she completed additional residency and fellowship training and earned a Master of Science in clinical research. She is board-certified in five specialties: Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Critical Care Medicine, Neurocritical Care, and Clinical Informatics. As a physician-scientist, she leads PRISMAp, a cross-disciplinary partnership that has sustained continuous NIH funding since 2010. Her research focuses on a trustworthy, reproducible, and ethical computing framework for artificial intelligence in medicine. Her independent research program has generated $65.6 million in total funding, approximately 300 peer-reviewed publications, and more than 25,000 citations. She designed and launched Florida's first graduate program in AI for biomedical and health sciences (AIBHS) and leads the $2.56 million NIH-funded AI Passport curriculum.
Dr. Bihorac was elected to the Association of American Physicians in 2024 and to the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida in 2025, and she received the 2026 Top 20 Clinical Research Achievement Award from the Clinical Research Forum. She leads international data science task forces for the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, advises UF Health leadership on the enterprise AI operating model, and is the Chair of the NIH Clinical Informatics and Digital Health (CIDH) Standing Panel. She has mentored more than 100 trainees and early-stage investigators worldwide.
