My bio

My name is Brenda Fahy, MD, and I joined the Department of Anesthesiology as a professor and chief of the Critical Care Medicine division in 2012. I earned my medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and completed my anesthesiology residency and critical care medicine fellowship at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.

I currently serve as the associate chair of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, as well as the program director of the Adult Combined Cardiothoracic Critical Care Fellowship. I’m also the Physician Director for Quality for Critical Care at Shands. I’ve held many titles and academic appointments over the course of my career. Before coming to the University of Florida, I was the division chief of Critical Care Anesthesiology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.

My research interests involve studies in the critically ill patient population as well as in multidisciplinary translational research. I also have an interest in education research that encompasses learning techniques, including flipped-classroom and team-based learning. These teaching models have been incorporated into electroencephalography education and team-based emergency responses.

I’ve been been actively involved with the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) since 2003, when I began volunteering as an examiner. I’ve held numerous positions within the ABA since then, including on its board of directors, as its vice president, and as a member of 12 different committees. In 2018, I was proud to be elected to a term as the president of the ABA, serving as the fourth female president in its history.
