About me
As the co-Director of the Neuromodulation Fellowship Training and the Chief of Electroconvulsive Therapy Services, I am responsible for the administration of UF’s two hospital ECT suites. I also offer psychiatric Deep Brain Stimulation programming and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. I collaborate closely with the departments of neurology, neurosurgery, and anesthesia (where I have a joint faculty appointment). Additionally, I have a part-time clinical appointment at the Student Health Center.
My clinical and academic interests encompass neuromodulation, electromagnetic field theory, emerging psychiatric treatments, psychedelic neuroscience, neurophenomenology, biophysics, philosophy of consciousness, and history in medicine. I seek to cultivate an interest in arts and humanities in medicine for our trainees. This enhances empathy which leads to improved rapport building and the delivery of compassionate/empathetic care. As a medical student mentor, I direct 4 senior-level medical student electives in ECT (tracks for psychiatry and anesthesia), TMS, and Applied Electricity. As a psychiatric resident teacher, I provide didactic series in clinical neuroscience, neuropsychiatry, and neuromodulation.
I obtained undergraduate degrees in zoology, physiology, and philosophy from Louisiana State University in 1992, and completed medical school (LSU, New Orleans) in 1996 followed by a psychiatry residency at Tulane University. I was on faculty at Tulane University for 20 years, including having served as their director of ECT. I also augmented my training with fellowships in electroconvulsive therapy at Emory University and transcranial magnetic stimulation at Duke University.
Students interested in scholarly activities, or residents interested in the Neuromodulation Training Fellowship program should email me directly.
