About me

My name is Marc Maybauer, M.D., Ph.D., and I joined the department of anesthesiology as a professor and chief of the critical care medicine division in 2023. My specialties include critical care medicine, emergency medicine, cardiothoracic anesthesia, transesophageal echocardiography and mechanical circulatory support. I completed medical school at Justus Liebig University in Germany and residencies at the university hospitals in Mainz and Ulm. I then went on to a critical care medicine fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and a cardiac anesthesia fellowship at the Oxford Heart Centre with Oxford University Hospitals in the UK.

I am the editor of the textbook Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation – A Problem Based Learning Approach and have an interest in teaching on the subject. My scientific work initially began with airway management and the pathophysiology of septic and circulatory shock before developing into ARDS and ECMO. I have also been involved in work on the development of the EasyTube and vasopressin V1a receptor agonists. Most recently, I have taken an interest in anticoagulation for patients with ECMO support and further development of the ProtekDuo RVAD/ECMO cannula.

After more than 20 years in anesthesia and critical care medicine, I am fortunate to have gained significant experience in all fields of my specialty while learning from various mentors and I am excited to share my knowledge and contribute to the education of the next generation of students and trainees.
