Marie T Berg

Hello, my name is Dr. Marie T. Berg, and I am a neonatologist at UF Health.

The seeds of my career in medicine were planted by my mother, who was a teacher. She was beloved by her students and constantly striving to learn. I watched as she made a difference in the lives of children in need and wanted to do the same. I also saw my stepbrother undergo one of the very first pediatric bone marrow transplants and witnessed how much hope advances in medicine can bring families.

I was drawn to neonatology because the impact on children’s health is perhaps greater at any other point in life. Many of our babies have been in the NICU for some time, and I truly appreciate the bonds we build with families. I was also inspired by the dedication and skills of nurses, respiratory therapists, and other staff who work with families to act as both a voice and safety net for patients.

My goal is to provide the best care possible for babies. I believe the best way to do this is by ensuring that providers and staff collaborate to offer innovative, evidence-based care and continue striving for improvement. I believe one of the greatest impacts I can have on the future is by teaching the next generation of physicians. I am grateful to work with our amazing residents and fellows.

I earned my medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed my training in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center. I have had a longstanding interest in neonatal neurology, and during my fellowship, I focused on hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. I later served in the faculty at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital, where I developed an interest in systematic review and meta-analysis, a large focus of my research. I am currently an Associate Editor of the Cochrane Neonatal Review Group.

I have a strong commitment to medical education and served as the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Director at UVM. I also worked with Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, where I developed an interest in quality improvement. I am now the Medical Director of the NICU and Physician Director of Quality for Pediatrics, and I received the Clinical Excellence Award for Pediatrics in 2024.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, writing, and traveling. I have two wonderful daughters, and my husband and I are thoroughly enjoying watching them navigate adulthood.
