About me

My name is Matthew Burns, MD, PhD, and I am a board-certified neurologist and movement disorders specialist at the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at UF Health, serving as an assistant professor in the University of Florida Department of Neurology.

I received my medical and doctorate degrees from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago in 2012. I went on and completed my neurology residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center in 2018 and my movement disorders fellowship at UF in 2021.

In clinic, I see patients for a variety of movement disorders including dystonia, tremor disorders and ataxia. When I’m not seeing patients in clinic, I run a National Institutes of Health-funded lab focused on the non-motor symptoms of neurodegenerative disorders, the molecular mechanisms of aging and neuromodulation.

As a clinician and a researcher, I aim to translate my knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease, high-field imaging, brain machine interface and electrophysiology into therapies for patients who have movement disorders and dementia.

In my free time, I enjoy exercising, playing piano and helping coach my kids' little league teams.
