The UF Health Shands E.R. is co-located with the UF Health Shands Trauma Center, the area’s only Level I facility, that sees both adult and pediatric trauma patients.
Emergency care is something that you never think about until you need it. Last year, was estimated that 100 million Americans visited the emergency room.
The UF Health Shands E.R. offers comprehensive emergency services for adults, including state-of-the art imaging capabilities. The E.R. is also home to the UF Health Shands Comprehensive Stroke Center that is nationally certified by The Joint Commission as a center offering the highest level of care for stroke patients.
It is important to recognize the signs of when to go to the emergency room. Signs of a medical emergency can include, but are not limited to:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Chest of upper abdominal pain/pressure
- Fainting
- Sudden dizziness, weakness or change vision
- Sudden, severe pain
- Bleeding that won't stop
- Severe or persistent vomiting blood
- Coughing up or vomiting blood
- Suicidal or homicidal feelings
In the event of an emergency
If you have an emergency, please call 911, consult your doctor or go directly to the emergency room. The emergency rooms at UF Health Shands Hospital offer treatment from board-certified emergency physicians.

Meds to beds is a bedside free service designed with your convenience in mind. Our meds to beds program allows a pharmacist to deliver your medications to you prior to your discharge from the hospital.

Costs, billing, and insurance
