Neuromodulating agents

Neuromodulator injection of agents such as Botox is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. There are different neuromodulators on the market, all of which act similarly: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin. Neruomodulators work by limiting the contraction of the treated muscles reducing wrinkles and folds in the skin. By proper placement of Botox (botulinum toxin), we relax the muscles causing the wrinkles in a way to give a smoother and more youthful appearance.

Common uses for Botox and related products include:

  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows
  • “Crow’s feet”, wrinkles at the lateral corners of the eyes

Advanced injection procedures we commonly perform:

  • Injectable brow lift
  • Radial lip lines
  • Dimply or pebbly chin
  • Neck bands

What to expect with this procedure

Your physician will determine the precise amount and location for the botulinum toxin to achieve the result you desire. The procedure is short (minutes) and comfortable. The treatment consists of using a very fine needle to delicately place the precise amount of botulinum toxin in the proper location to achieve a natural, youthful appearance. Each treatment requires multiple gentle injections in each area of desired treatment.

The results of the treatment gradually become apparent over the course of 5-8 days. The results typically last from 3-5 months depending on the individual and the area treated. Studies show that regularly scheduled Botox injections will provide a prolonged youthful appearance.

Although this is a very common procedure, it is certainly not foolproof. For the most predictable, natural looking results you should only trust a dermatologist with extensive training and experience in the use of the product.

Filler agents

Filler agents are used to replace lost or redistributed volume. As we age, volume in the skin and subcutaneous tissue is naturally lost or redistributed. The skin loses its elasticity and structural support with time and begins to wrinkle and sag. Filler agents can be used to add volume to the skin and subcutaneous tissue, filling out wrinkles, creases and folds. Artistically smoothing out wrinkles and re-contouring the face will help you recapture a more natural youthful appearance.

There are multiple filler agents on the market to consider. There are multiple hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvaderm, Restylane, Perlane and Belotero. Other particulate fillers include Radiesse and Sculptra. Our highly trained physicians will determine the best treatment to optimize your results and give the most aesthetically desirable appearance.

Common uses for filler agents include:

  • Smile lines in the area around the nose, mouth and chin
  • Dark circles under eyes
  • To add volume to thinning lips
  • To remove fine lines radiating out around the lips
  • To reduce unhappy looking, downward turning angles of the mouth
  • To add volume to cheeks for a more youthful facial contour
  • To blend and smooth out scars

What to expect with this procedure

Our experienced physicians are highly trained in the most advanced filler techniques to give the most comfortable, precise, and natural appearance. The treatment takes a matter of minutes to perform. Our techniques are designed to minimize discomfort and bruising. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most common fillers we use. Several factors which make HA fillers so popular are that hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin. It needs no skin testing prior to its use, it can be removed if needed and it offers very predictable aesthetic results when administered. Results last from 6-12 months depending on the area treated. Most of our patients return to everyday activities immediately with no downtime.

Even though the injection of filler agents is very common, there are associated risks, as with any medical procedure. For the most naturally contoured, rejuvenated appearance, you should only trust a dermatologist highly trained in the delicate aesthetic art.
