Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of the diseases of the structures that support teeth.
The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. A professional who practices this specialty field of dentistry is known as a periodontist.
Periodontal diseases take many forms. Left untreated, they lead to bone loss and the primary cause fo tooth loss in adults.
