Amalia L Cochran, MD

I serve as the vice chair of faculty development in the University of Florida Department of Surgery. I have completed a surgical education research fellowship, have won university-wide and national teaching awards, and have been named an Outstanding Alumni of Texas A&M College of Medicine in 2016 and Distinguished Master Educator by the Association for Surgical Education in 2019. My research interests are focused on education, clinical outcomes and the use of technology to enhance surgical education and patient care.

I earned my bachelor’s in political science at Texas A&M University, where I subsequently received my medical degree after earning my master’s in political science at the University of Colorado. I received my general surgery training at the University of Utah and burns/critical care training at the University of Texas Medical Branch and the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas. Most recently, I completed a graduate certificate in Native American Studies at Montana State University. My clinical work is focused on acute burn care, critical care in burns and burn reconstruction. I am a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of the American College of Critical Care Medicine.

I am a Past President of the Association of Women Surgeons and Association for Surgical Education, and am a former member of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors. I also volunteer my time as President of the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation.

In my free time, I enjoy running, cycling, skiing, reading literary fiction, knitting, cooking, eating great food, and spending time with my two Scottish Collies and two cats.
