My bio

My name is Amy Sheer, MD, and I am an assistant professor of medicine in the division of general internal medicine at the University of Florida department of medicine. I graduated with a master of public health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and went on to medical school at the University of Florida, followed by an internal medicine residency, also at UF. I am board-certified in internal medicine.

I was inspired to become a physician to reverse, prevent and treat chronic diseases. I have experienced firsthand the pain and hardships that preventable chronic diseases can cause, not only to the patient, but to their families. I am passionate about improving quality of life and adding life to years. While earning my MPH prior to medical school, I became more inspired to focus on obesity and lifestyle medicine. I want my patients to know I am on their team and will work to help them reach their health goals.

I am a diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and have received several awards I’m proud of, including the UF Department of Medicine Patient First Award, College of Medicine Exemplary Teacher Award and the National Institutes of Health Intramural Research Award.

I am currently working on developing an obesity medicine fellowship at UF Health and teaching materials about weight management for faculty, residents, students and patients. I have special expertise in diabetes, eating disorders, GERD, heart disease, obesity, plant-based lifestyle medicine, prediabetes and preventive health care.

Outside of work, you can find me spending time with my family and being outdoors. My favorite things are my three children, husband, two mastiffs and ginger cat.
