Emily R T McClain, AuD

Hello, my name is Emily Tuttle McClain, audiologist at the UF Health Hearing Center. I became interested in the dynamic field of audiology after attending a summer camp for deaf children in Indiana while studying at Purdue University in 1990. During that week, I realized that communication plays a crucial role in children’s lives, which inspired me to pursue a degree in audiology.

I have been an employee of the University of Florida and UF Health since 1995. I began as a clinical fellow and was eventually promoted to clinical coordinator and then to chief of service, a combined 15 years. The highlight of my career was initiating the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program at UF Health. As a young clinician, I was fortunate to work with my mentor and a fantastic group of audiologists in Florida to promote a bill for universal newborn hearing screenings for all infants born in the state, which became law in 2000. I have enjoyed many facets of audiology at UF Health, including pediatric evaluations, pediatric hearing aid fittings, the Alachua County school contract, and my role on the UF Craniofacial Team for many years.

Currently, I evaluate patients—from pediatric to geriatric—referred through otolaryngology for the diagnosis and treatment of hearing issues from various causes. These audiologic evaluations help determine if there is a surgical option or guide the best treatment for the patient.

Outside of work, I enjoy working out, specifically strength training, heading to the beach, and spending time with my family. I am a proud mother of two grown sons who are avid Gator fans. Gainesville, Florida, has been a great location to raise a family.
