About me

I am an associate professor of surgery in the University of Florida Division of Acute Care Surgery and director of the UF Health Shands Burn Center. I specialize in burns and trauma injuries, emergency general surgery and critical care. My clinical interests include burn resuscitation and reconstruction, surgical critical care, renal replacement therapy, care in the austere environment and aero-medical evacuation. I am a board-certified surgeon with subspecialty training in burn surgery and surgical critical care.

Prior to joining the UF College of Medicine faculty, I served in the US Army from 2002 to 2017. Stateside, my roles included burn trauma surgeon and intensivist at the U.S. Army Burn Center and Brooke Army Medical Center, as well as medical director for the U.S. Army Burn Flight Team, responsible for aeromedical evacuation of critically injured burn patients for the U.S. Department of Defense. I served as a surgeon during multiple combat deployments and as an instructor for combat casualty care-oriented training for the Department of Defense and internationally.

I earned my medical degree from the UF College of Medicine. I completed my general surgery internship and residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, where I devoted a year of my training to research at R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. While on active duty with the US Army, I completed a burn surgery fellowship at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Upon leaving military service, I completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

I am devoted to educating trainees in medicine and allied health professions, multidisciplinary providers of burn care and community partners. I conduct clinical research in burns and trauma and am a member of several professional organizations, including the International Society for Burn Injuries, the American Burn Association, the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States.
