My bio

My name is Jeffrey P. Jacobs, MD, FACS, FACC, FCCP, and I am a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics in the UF Health Congenital Heart Center and UF Health Shands Children's Hospital. I have been a Professor at UF since 2020. Previously, I served as a cardiac surgeon at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital from 1998-2019 and was a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University.

From 2007-18, I was the Director of the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Heart Transplantation Program, which performed over 180 pediatric heart transplants and specialized in high-risk pediatric cardiac transplantation. I was Director of the Andrews/Daicoff Cardiovascular Program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital from 2013-18 and Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery and Co-director of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Heart Institute from 2015-18.

In 1985, I received my Bachelor of Science degree with a Chemistry Major and a Religion Minor from the University of Miami.

In 1988, I received my Doctor of Medicine with Research Distinction from the University of Miami School of Medicine through the Honors Program in Medicine, a combined 6-year BS/MD program. I graduated as a Doctor of Medicine with Distinction in Research in 1988.

I then completed a five-year Residency in General Surgery, followed by a two-year Residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. I spent an additional year at the University of London in England training in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children. This Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Fellowship was through the Overseas Doctors Training Scheme of The Royal College of Surgeons of England.

I perform both pediatric and adult congenital cardiothoracic surgery and have performed over 4,300 operations.

I hold editing positions at some of the most widely read journals in cardiac and thoracic care, including: Cardiology in the Young (Editor-in-Chief, 2013-present); World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (Associate Editor, 2009-present); and Annals of Thoracic Surgery (Senior Editor for Congenital Heart Surgery, 2022-present).

I am also Senior Editor for Pediatric and Congenital heart surgery for The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Cardiothoracic Surgery E-Book (2020-present).

For 18 years (2001-18), I served as chair of The Annual International Symposium on Congenital Heart Disease with echocardiographic, anatomic, surgical and pathologic correlation. This annual symposium was one of the largest multidisciplinary meetings in the world for congenital cardiac disease. From 2009-12, this meeting was co-sponsored by The American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS).

I am a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. I also have the Congenital Heart Surgery Certificate from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American College of Cardiology (FACC), and the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP).

From 2007-14, I served as founding Secretary of The World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (WSPCHS).

Although my primary professional activity is as a clinical cardiothoracic surgeon, I have particular expertise and interest in health care quality measurement, outcomes analysis, public reporting, linking databases and longitudinal follow-up. I have authored 747 peer-reviewed publications, 63 book chapters and nine books. I also have extensive experience planning educational meeting programs. I perform both pediatric and adult cardiac and thoracic surgery and enjoy providing individual attention to both patients and their families. I spend my leisure time with my wife Stacy and our awesome children.
