My bio

When I arrived to Gainesville, Florida, in 1999, there was only a two bed laboratory at the University of Florida and no sleep program at the Malcom Randall VA Hospital. Today, there is an active sleep program at the VA Hospital and a 12 bed sleep center at UF, accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. I am a professor of medicine in the UF Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine and the director of the UF Sleep Medicine Fellowship, which I established with the help of Mary Wagner, MD. I have also served as the medical director for the UF Health Sleep Center from 1999 through 2022. My clinical interests, include sleep disorders, obstructive and central sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, nocturnal respiratory failure and insomnia.

I earned my medical degree at the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed my internal medicine residency at the University of California Irvine College of Medicine. I came back to the UF College of Medicine to complete a pulmonary medicine fellowship.

I have authored over 200 peer reviewed research publications and coauthored the first publication using Oronasal Masks for treatment of sleep apnea that is written in popular sleep medicine textbooks. I am also the deputy editor of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. My dedication to the field of sleep medicine has led me to receive the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Excellence in Education Award in 2010 and the Nathaniel Kleitman Award by the AASM for Contributions to the Field of Sleep Medicine in 2020. I have also served as a past AASM Foundation president.

When not practicing, I enjoy sailing and kayaking.
