My bio
As an assistant professor and an acute care surgeon in the University of Florida Department of Surgery, I treat patients for traumatic injury and those needing emergency general surgery. I am also the associate director of research for the UF Intelligent Critical Care Center.
I graduated magna cum laude from Clemson University, receiving my Bachelor of Science in health science in 2008. Staying in South Carolina, I obtained my medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Then, I relocated to Florida to pursue a general surgery residency and NIH-sponsored research fellowship at the Sepsis and Critical Illness Research center at UF. Subsequently, I completed a surgical critical care fellowship at UF. I continue to further my education by pursuing a PhD in biomedical informatics through the UF College of Medicine.
My peer-reviewed publications and research presentations at national and international meetings have evolved from translational science, focusing on bone marrow failure and anemia after traumatic injury, to data science, focusing on machine learning to augment personalized, patient-centered decision-making.
Additionally, I am interested in medical student and resident education, and technical skills development. I am also interested in advancing trauma care through the Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma and Advanced Trauma Operative Management curricula and as associate program director for the general surgery residency and director of the Technical Skills Training Program.
