My bio

My name is Rodney Edwards, MD, and I am a professor in the University of Florida Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. I currently hold the Harry Prystowsky Chair and am vice chair for research in the department. I am board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, and maternal and fetal medicine.

I received my bachelor’s degree from Houston Christian (formerly Houston Baptist) University and my medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Following graduation, I moved to Gainesville and completed both my residency in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship in maternal and fetal medicine at UF. During my fellowship, I completed a master’s degree in clinical investigation.

I have experience in both private practice and academic medicine, but most of my career has been in academic medicine. Along with clinical practice, I have extensive experience with teaching, research and administration. Prior to returning to UF in 2023, I was chief of the section of maternal-fetal medicine and the program director for the maternal and fetal medicine fellowship at the University of Oklahoma for several years. Previously, I was also the program director for the MFM fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

My research interests include pregnancy-related infections, abnormal labor, obesity and the interactions between these areas. I have a solid track record of research funding and have published over 100 full-length manuscripts, more than 80% of which were peer-reviewed, original research articles.

I have a strong interest in providing high-quality, evidence-based clinical care. I find meaning in teaching others to do so as well, and in contributing to the research evidence upon which care is based.
