About me

Hello, my name is Salvatore T. Scali, MD, FACS, DFSVS, RPVI, but I go by “Sal.” I am a professor of surgery in the University of Florida Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy. I am also medical director of the UF Health Shands noninvasive vascular ultrasound laboratory and program director of the UF vascular surgery fellowship. I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a distinguished fellow for the Society for Vascular Surgery.

I earned my medical degree from Georgetown University, followed by my general surgery residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. During my residency, I also completed a vascular biology research fellowship within the Harvard-Longwood Vascular Research Program. Subsequently, I completed a clinical vascular surgery fellowship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

During my undergraduate training, my interest in biochemistry and experiences with physician mentors inspired me to become a doctor. Faculty mentors from my general surgery residency — along with the unique combination of cardiovascular physiology, a complex treatment armamentarium, longitudinal relationships with patients and the immediate impact vascular surgery makes on people’s lives — were all factors that led me to choosing to become a vascular surgeon.

My clinical practice is primarily based at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center. However, I provide call coverage at the UF Health Shands Hospital. I would like my patients to know that the care I provide will be compassionate and patient-centered while being bolstered by a contemporary perspective on the current evidence base.

I am interested in a variety of clinical topics in modern vascular practice, including infrainguinal arterial reconstruction, carotid stenting and aneurysm disease. My clinical research interests include advanced endovascular therapies for thoracic and aortic pathologies, open and endovascular therapies for renal, mesenteric, carotid and peripheral arterial occlusive disease, as well as comparative effectiveness outcomes research and quality improvement initiatives. My basic and translational research efforts focus on elucidating the biologic mechanisms responsible for hand dysfunction after hemodialysis access placement, determining the effects of uremia on skeletal muscle biology and mitochondrial bioenergetic in PAD patients, as well as understanding biologic signatures of frailty after open aortic surgery.

I have an active National Institutes of Health-funded research program examining the biology of dialysis access related hand ischemia, as well as skeletal muscle changes associated with renal dysfunction among patients with peripheral artery disease. I am board certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery and have special expertise in aneurysms, carotid disease, peripheral artery disease, dialysis access surgery and mesenteric artery disease.

I am a first-generation Italian American, as my family immigrated from Grotteria, Italy. When I’m not practicing medicine, I enjoy exercising, scuba diving, reading and traveling.
