My bio

William "Troy" Donahoo, MD, is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of Florida. He leads the division with a focus on advancing excellence in clinical care, research, and education in nutrition, obesity, diabetes, metabolic disease, adrenal disease and thyroid disease

Dr. Donahoo’s clinical work centers on the comprehensive management of obesity and diabetes across inpatient and outpatient settings. He has directed the Endocrine Obesity Management Clinic and the Inpatient Endocrinology and Diabetes Management Team at UF Health, helping to integrate nutrition therapy, pharmacologic treatment, metabolic surgery collaboration, and long-term chronic disease management into coordinated, patient-centered care. His approach is grounded in the physiology and neurohormonal regulation of body weight, emphasizing evidence-based strategies that address the biological complexity of metabolic disease.

His research spans clinical trials, health services research, and large-scale real-world data analysis. Earlier work helped define the metabolic effects of caloric restriction, intermittent fasting, dietary macronutrient composition, and bariatric interventions. At UF, he collaborates extensively within the OneFlorida+ and PCORnet networks to study diabetes epidemiology, medication safety, health disparities, cardiometabolic outcomes, and the neurologic effects of newer glucose-lowering therapies. His work reflects a commitment to combining rigorous physiology with modern data science to improve care for patients with obesity and diabetes.

A dedicated educator and multiple-time teaching award recipient, Dr. Donahoo lectures widely on obesity medicine, lipid metabolism, diabetes management, and scientific rigor in nutrition research. He mentors endocrine fellows, residents, and graduate trainees, fostering the integration of nutrition science, metabolic physiology, and evidence-based therapeutics into contemporary endocrine practice.

As Division Chief, Dr. Donahoo is committed to faculty development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and expanding research and clinical innovation in endocrinology and metabolic health.
