My bio

My name is Roniel Cabrera, MD, MS, and I am an associate professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, and serve as the hepatology section chief and medical director of liver transplantation for the division. I joined the University of Florida faculty in 2006. My clinical interests include liver transplant, liver disease, cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

I earned my medical degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and completed an internal medicine residency, gastroenterology fellowship and advanced hepatology and liver transplantation fellowship at UF. I earned a Certificate in Clinical/Translational Science through participation in the UF Advanced Postgraduate Program in Clinical Investigation (APPCI), funded by a Clinical Research Curriculum Award.

I am a recipient of numerous awards, including the National Institute of Health T32, LRP and KL2 career development awards, which led to clinical and translational research expertise in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). I lead the multidisciplinary Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) clinic that focuses on the clinical management and research of patients with HCC. The clinic serves as a platform for translational research and clinical trials. Additionally, I am a recipient of several awards for excellence in patient care or satisfaction and exemplary teaching.

My research interests include clinical/translational research in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Specifically, I study immunopathogenesis of hepatitis C-related cirrhosis and HCC. I am the author of 60 peer-reviewed publications, 29 abstracts submitted at national and international meetings and 11 book chapters. I am the Primary Investigator (PI) on six externally funded grants, totaling over half a million, and also the PI for several industry-sponsored studies and clinical trials.
