Orthopaedic Sports Medicine
Americans love sports, and as more participate, more of them suffer some kind of injury. The Centers for Disease Control reports more than two and a half million children and young adults with sports-related injuries appear in emergency rooms each year.
Sports injuries can range from sprains and strains to heat exhaustion to serious muscle or joint damage, as well as broken bones.
Care providers may include orthopedic specialists, emergency room physicians, or athletic trainers and coaches. Any athlete, young, old, professional or amateur, can be in need of modern sports medicine. It's an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis, treatment and recovery, with the goal of restoring or maximizing function to the damaged area.
